baltimore. two-alarm fire started just after 2:00 at a house in the 5000 block of denwood avenue. >> five people were tilled in the blaze, four of them children. one person survived by jumping from a second floor window. multiple firefighters were also injured and were taken to the hospital. we'll have an update on this story throughout the morning. some other news now. it appears having the best record in baseball means nothing when it comes to playoff time. >> things are different in this big game. the washington nationals are actually facing elimination from the 2012 playoffs. it's all a result of the pitching and hitting from a team that backed into the playoffs. kristin fisher joins us live from outside nats park in southeast d.c. she has more. kristin, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, mike and andrea. you know, one more loss and it's all over for the team with the best record in baseball. but, you know, a best record doesn't mean all that much when you can't get any runs in the playoffs against the ranking

report of the morning. >> that's why jessica is here talking about the headlines. >> good morning to both of you. investors will be focusing on the job market yet again when we get the latest unemployment numbers out of the government. investors also hoping for better earnings news after we saw problems with alcoa. shares fell on the aluminum company's cautious onlook mostly because -- outlook mostly because of a slowdown in china. the dow dropped 128 points in trading. the nasdaq was off by 13 points and the s&p 5 hundred was down by -- 500 was down by about 9. this is coming as better news. the u.s. economy grew modestly in september. the federal reserve says its latest assessment of economic conditions shows an improving housing market, helping many areas of the country last month. at the same time consumer spending was flat or up just slightly. in most of the regions surveyed. more people struggling financially are staying in their homes. foreclosure activity fell in september to a five-month low. according to realty track,

she disappeared last friday while walking to school. the f.b.i. and police discovered the body near what is described as an abandoned mining shack. pakistanis are outraged by the shooting of a 14-year-old peace campaigner by the taliban. the nation's first national peace award winner is in critical condition after taliban gunman boarded her school bus and shot her in the neck and head. the teenager has fought the taliban since she was 11 when she took a stand in favor of educating young girls. earlier today a number of pakistanis marched in the streets in a show of support for malala yousafzai. stay with us. 9news now returns in two minutes.

this morning. you're at 49. as we look outside on our michael & son weather camera, this is wisconsin avenue northbound out of town. it is a quiet morning. generally clear skies, 52 at reagan national officially. but the wind out of the northwest at 10. there are areas which have fallen into the upper 40s. we have windchills closer to 40 degrees this morning with the humidity at 49% and the air is really dried out. dew points are now in the low 30s. our weather headline, a cool thursday, low 60s today. it's going to be kind of chilly through saturday. saturday's highs may only be in the low 60s. mid-60s tomorrow. warmer sunday. sunday we shoot to the 70s. our next chance for some showers, i think that holds off till monday afternoon. we are watching some cooler air off to the north. a little bit of this will be with us the next few days. dallas is in the 60s this morning. that air mass starts to arrive here for sunday and monday. so that will help moderate things as we finish out the weekend. but all in all, you know, if you have outdoor plans the next few days, the weather shouldn't

be too much of a factor. 63 today. it's going to be pleasant. tonight we're dipping into the 40s. maybe a few upper 30s. mid-60s tomorrow. breezy as another front comes through. that knocks us into the 30s to low 40s on friday night so we could have a decent amount of frost around north and west friday night. saturday 62. a cool day. then we recover nicely by sunday. 75 for the skins and ravens both home and then monday a chance of a shower again 75 degrees. it's 5:18. here comes monika with timesaver traffic. last night at about 7:30 there was an accident on the eastbound side of the bay bridge. it is closed on the eastbound side at route 18 with that investigation and cleanup on the westbound side as you approach the bridge span. you want to stay to the right to get around this activity. eastbound side of route 50 after the bay bridge shut down with that cleanup and investigation. let's take a live look near that spot and you can see that the bay bridge itself looks okay. not affected by all of that. but if you are heading outbound, you want to keep that

winds a little brisk this morning. we've had gusts of 13, 14. with some temps in the low to mid-40s. that's pushing wind chills in a few spots upper 30s. a few clouds in the mountains. otherwise it's been generally a clear morning out there. that's why we've got the chillier stuff. low to mid-40s now out to our west. western maryland, shenandoah valley. mountains are seeing some 30- degree readings. it's 54 on the bay in annapolis and cambridge. 44 in fredricksburg. so you get away from the bay or downtown, temperatures are a lot chillier. looking for highs a little later in the low 60s. let's check in now monika samtani. it is 5:32. timesaver traffic. >> thankyou so much, howard. i was on the phone with ray from state highway. he gave me great information about what happened overnight on the eastbound side of route 50 about five miles east of the chesapeake bay bridge. let's take a live look at the bay bridge. it was a tractor-trailer and a car at about 7:50 last night. hazmat situation ongoing right now on the eastbound side. you will have to exit at 41

kent narrows bridge and take that as your detour. exit 42 is where the accident happened. westbound if you're coming inbound this morning, you need to stay to the right to get by the activity. ray tells me everything should, be reopened at 7:00 a.m. i will keep you posted on that one. let's take you back over to the maps, this time over to the west side of town. no problems to report here on the gw parkway, 66 inside the beltway. but look at that an accident on the outer loop of the beltway. ramp to route 355. it's not actually on the beltway. it's on the ramp. truck hit a pole there. it may take a while to clean that one up. let's take a live look outside one more time. this time at connecticut avenue. it should not hopefully affect traffic here on the north side as you head toward 355. i'll be back with more coming up in a few minutes at 5:40. back to you. 5:33 now. the washington nationals one game away frbing eliminated from -- from being eliminated from the 2012 playoffs. is it because teddy won?

day. northwest winds at 10. by lunch time probably not one you're going to eat outside with 56 and a northwest wind today. we do see highs getting into the low 60s. 63 for the high. 4:00 61 and by 8:00 54 degrees. going to the game this afternoon, game four, hopefully not the last game of the year. 61 for first pitch. by the latter innings, i expect temperatures to be falling into the upper 50s. so you'll need a sweat shirt. look at the chill to the north and west. lots of 30s from pittsburgh to charleston. garrett county, oakland was down to 30 degrees last check. there they are at 30 with winchester 43. culpeper 43. but the bay still rather warm. it's early in the season. fall season that is. so easton is # 50 -- is 50. our warm spot the patuxent river naval air station at 54. clear skies, 52. good visibility and we've got winds this morning northwest at 10 miles an hour. we've been watching the last few days the jet stream up to the north. you can clearly follow these

clouds across minnesota, north dakota. this is kind of the boundary between some much colder air up in canada and some cool air down by us. in fact, it's cold enough to see a little snow this morning in michigan. i point this out because as these storms come across the northern part of the country, they're dragging cold fronts toward us. we're going to have a couple of days around here where temperatures will be on the cool side. low 60s today. mid-60s tomorrow. low 60s saturday. but there's also some warm air down in texas. i expect to get that at least in here for monday or sunday and monday. so in the short term, the fronts will come, one tomorrow. any showers with it stay in the mountains to our north. so not any significant weather. just reinforces the coolness that has moved in for today. looking at our forecast, expecting a high of 63. a pleasant afternoon. winds turn southwest 5 to 10 after northwesterly winds this morning. tonight we're into the 40s. maybe a few upper 30s. tomorrow breezy, 66. saturday cool, 62. in fact, saturday morning,

don't be surprised if you get a lot of patchy frost around. by sunday, though, certainly the better day of the weekend, warmer. skins are home. ravens are home, 75. monday also 75 with a chance for a shower. it is 5:51. here comes monika samtani with timesaver traffic. it's kind of a good news- bad news situation. first of all the good news is that the accident that happened overnight eastbound route 50 after the bay bridge has completely been cleared. i was on the phone with state highway. they tell me that all lanes are open. but here on the north side of town, the beltway outer loop side on the ramp to northbound route 355, you'll want to watch out. there's a truck that hit a pole. they have the ramp blocked for a while. we're making some phone calls to see if they've been able to let some traffic through. in the meantime keep that in mind. let's take a live look at the beltway at university boulevard. this is fine. again it's up ahead on the outer loop heading westbound on 495 trying to exit on to northbound 355. let's go back over to our maps. this time a look first of all on the inbound side of i-66.
